Scripps Ranch, California, is an upscale, inland community within the City of San Diego, located east of Highway 15, north of the Marine Corps Air Station Miramar and east of Mira Mesa. It was originally a 400 ranch purchased by Ellen Browning Scripps for $5,000. Her half-brother, newspaper man E. W. Scripps eventually acquired 2,100 acres of realty on which to build his winter home where he believed that the dry climate would keep him healthy. During the late 1970s the Ranch was sold to developers who built an upscale community of ranch style homes, over 300 of which were burned in the Cedar Fire in 2003.

General Neighborhood Information

Today, the community, located east of I-15, is a tree-lined collection of broad streets lined with middle and upper middle-class homes. Much of the open area is set aside for recreation and as nature preserves. Scripps Ranch is one of San Diego’s new affluent, upscale communities and takes pride in remaining secluded and private, although there will generally be a wide selection of homes for sale.

The area attracts young families because of its small town ambiance, and its excellent schools. Soccer is a popular sport. The area surrounds Miramar Lake which offers hiking trails and fishing.

The Scripps Ranch Business Park houses large companies like Geico and smaller product and service-oriented companies. It provides employment to local residents. Shopping and other services are centrally located. There are numerous activities for residents of all ages. The area is also home to Cub Scout Pack 616, one of the largest Cub Scout packs in the state.

Recently built facilities include the Scripps Ranch Village Center, a community recreation center, a state-of-the-art library and a fire station, all of which greatly add to the value and charm of this special community.
